Birth of a Magickal Negress

By

Willonee Simone

I entered this reality plane on a dice roll,

blessed with the mercy of landing in a century

not so horrendously plagued with as many

deadly dichotomies.

Daredevil I am, fueled by Geminian air and cloaked in grey fire,

wielding ways of touching your mind in places

long overlooked, disowning old visions

tattooed upon my rich cocoa skin.

My mission is guided by the refusal

to surrender my Divine Femininity as I

scale the urban jungle towards written vindication.

I’m a commander of a speech once determined

to never properly grace my tongue, a light glistening from a tunnel

darkened by ignorance and cowardice;

check my Sphinx craft as I weave Ravenclaw riddles &

fresh renovations aimed at those dusty,

neglected senses of evolution.

Dare a second look—

see old Truth carried anew

on the dancing ashes of ancestral Pagan bones,

by the excavated incantations of everlasting Spirit.

Witness more like me who dare embrace and bless

beyond the imprisoning sadness of oppression.

Have you ever been experienced in this Strange Love?

Well I have, let me prove it to you:

Leap over that frozen faith with my sun-kissed hand,

down the rabbit hole of newness we go

in three, two, one…

Birth of a Magickal Negress was written by Willonee Simone, who earned her BA in English/Creative Writing at the University of Memphis in 2012 and is a second year graduate candidate at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. The foundation for her love of writing and literature was paved at an early age and blossomed during her teenage years through the kind of tortured freedom that only the ostracism of high school can grant a person.
